Ernest L Mullins, affectionately known as Ern, Crazy Ernie, Tazman, and even the Devil (yes, the one from those highly entertaining prank phone calls), passed away on May 14, 2025, in Toledo, OH. He was born in Springfield, OH, on October 1, 1953, embarking on a journey that would lead him to become a legendary family man, a devoted employee, and an all-around delightful rascal.
For over 31 years, Ernie proudly served as a dedicated worker at Jeep and was a staunch member of UAW - Local 12, bringing both skill and humor to the assembly line. Who knew factory floors could witness such comedic genius? His pranks were just as legendary; nothing delighted him more than giving family members a good laugh—or a mild heart attack—by answering phone calls with a theatrical "This is the Devil." According to him, this was a service he provided to keep everyone on their toes.
Ern’s personality was larger than life, a testament to his love for everyone he met. He could tease and tap dance on the very edge of awkwardness, leaving you wondering if you should laugh or be mildly concerned. But those encounters were always wrapped in affection. His ability to make light of even the most mundane moments turned the simplest of family gatherings into a riotous affair.
As much as he loved to poke fun at his family, nothing brought him greater joy than his role as a proud adoptive father to nine special needs children. His heart was as big as his sense of humor, and he dedicated a significant part of his life to volunteer work with Equine Therapy Riders Unlimited Inc. in Oak Harbor, OH. There he found genuine fulfillment, working to make a difference while inevitably inspiring laughter and warmth in those around him.
Ern found immense happinessin life playing pool, euchre, and fishing, although it is said that the fish had a better survival rate than most people who crossed paths with Uncle Ern at the lake. His family and friends were often swept into his world of adventure, where every outing promised hilarity, be it chasing them around the house with his fake teeth popping out or sharing tales of legendary fishing trips and how he almost caught the "big one" that got away.
He is survived by his beloved wife of nearly 51 years, Maureen M. Mullins, and their wonderful children: Richard Mullins, Darla (Mark) Durand, Christopher (Samantha) Mullins, Missy, Faith, Isaac, Sarina, and Karisa Mullins. His siblings, Linda Robertson, Fran (Richard) Miller, Jean Smithers, and brother George Mullins Sr. are also carrying on his legacy of laughter. His pride and joy only amplified with the addition of grandkids Victoria, Cheyenne, Hunter, and Marlee Durand, who all undoubtedly hope they’ve inherited his sense of humor and penchant for playful mischief.
Ernie was preceded in death by his cherished son, Dorian Mathew Mullins, as well as his father, Mitchel Mullins, his mother, Betty Mullins, and his nephew, George Mullins Jr. We hope they are all gathered together now, likely plotting their next playful prank to shake things up in the afterlife.
Ern was a rare blend of mischief and heart, and he leaves behind a family that will undoubtedly tease each other endlessly about the countless stories they share. As we say goodbye to this remarkable man, let us remember his kindness, laughter, and devilish charm that will forever ripple through the lives he touched—and maybe find a prank of our own to honor him.
