Eldridge "Mason" Smith Jr.

Eldridge Mason Smith Jr., of Maumee, Ohio "Mason", "Smitty", "Dad", and "Papa", died peacefully at his home in his wife, Cathy's arms and surrounded by Beth and Tom, Becky and Jimmy on Saturday, July 11, 2026. Born on September 20, 1944, in Fireco, West Virginia, Mason lived a long and fulfilling life devoted to the happiness and well-being of those he loved and the many communities he touched.

Mason was the beloved husband of Catherine (Spieker) Smith, a proud father to Robert Smith, Debra (Dave) Dunn, Kristy (Randy) Rugotzke, John Whitmire, and Aaron "AJ" Smith. He is also survived by 3 siblings; 13 loving grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eldridge Smith Sr. and Mary Josephine Frye whose influences helped shape him into the remarkable person he became; daughter-in-law, Karen; and great granddaughter, Riley.

Mason graduated from Clay High School in 1962 and received multiple degrees from the University of Toledo. He believed education was very important and continued his throughout his life. He was known for his unwavering dedication, integrity, and caring spirit.

Mason also believed in giving back to the community and was a volunteer Fireman and EMT at Northwood Fire 2. He worked for InterLake Steel before dedicating over four decades of his career to Johns Mansville. His roles were varied and influential—he served proudly in Human Resources, Training and Development, and as a Safety Coordinator. Mason’s forward-thinking approach led him to start the fire brigade, and he contributed greatly to both Plant 1 and Plant 7 throughout the years. His colleagues valued his reliability and mentorship, and he left a lasting mark on those who worked alongside him.

One of Mason’s proudest moments came from his part in scientific innovation: he was honored to meet Neil Armstrong and John Glenn, as Mason played a vital role in manufacturing tiles used on spacecrafts. This meeting not only highlighted his commitment to excellence but also connected him to historic achievements beyond measure.

Mason received his SPHR (Senior Professional Human Resource) after receiving his Green Belt in 6 Sigma methods and became an ISO 9001-2001 auditor. Smitty was a Labor Relations Instructor at Lourdes College and University of Toledo. In early 2000, Chrysler and the University of Toledo selected him to instruct Union Workforce Readiness  and Industrial and Specialized Safety Training for Chrysler's new Jeep Liberty work force. 

Outside of his professional achievements, Mason was deeply involved in his neighborhood, community, and family life. He invested considerable time in the Boy Scouts, guiding young people and helping them develop important life skills. Mason had a passion for woodworking and arts and crafts—many of his lovingly created pieces found their way into homes during the holidays, bringing warmth and beauty to others. He loved riding his motorcycle, golfing and enjoyed playing guitar in a Country Western band. He was an avid Notre Dame fan, Go Irish! Mason had the privilege of going down the Notre Dame tunnel on his 60th birthday. He also cheered on the Kansas City Chiefs, never missing a game.

He cherished traveling with his beloved wife Cathy, exploring USA together and visiting Great Britain, forging memories that would last a lifetime.

A Memorial Gathering to honor and celebrate Mason’s life will be held on Sunday, September 20, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, Southwest Toledo, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd, Toledo, OH 43614. Eldridge Mason Smith Jr. touched many lives with his kindness, commitment, and joyful approach to both work and recreation. He will be dearly missed but fondly remembered by all who knew him, living on through the enduring love of his family and the many friendships and achievements that marked his meaningful journey.
