Edward J. Cancio, fondly known as Eddie, passed away on July 16, 2026, in Perrysburg, Ohio, at the age of 69. Born on December 8, 1956, in Chicago, Illinois, Edward led an accomplished and devoted life, leaving behind a legacy of service, scholarship, and unwavering love for his family and friends.

Edward’s early years were defined by a strong commitment to education. He graduated from Oak Park River Forest High School in Chicago, demonstrating early on the intellectual curiosity that would define his career. He continued his academic journey at the University of Wisconsin in Oshkosh, earning both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees. Seeking further scholarly pursuits, Edward achieved his PhD at Utah State University, a testament to his discipline and passion for lifelong learning.

His professional life was dedicated to the betterment of others, especially children. From 1980 to 1989, Edward worked as a classroom teacher for children with Emotional and Behavioral Disorders (EBD) in Minnesota and Wisconsin. His deep empathy and understanding marked this period of his life, shaping the lives of countless students. His dedication to education carried him into leadership roles, where, from 1995 to 2001, Edward served as a school administrator in the suburbs of Chicago, making a lasting impact on those schools and communities.

Edward's distinguished career in higher education flourished as well. He shared his wisdom and experience as a university professor at both Northern Illinois University and the University of Toledo, where he was honored as Teacher of The Year in 2018. Edward’s guidance and expertise influenced the educators and leaders of tomorrow, ensuring his impact would resonate far beyond his own career.

He was a committed member of the Council for Children with Behavioral Disorders (CCBD) throughout his career. Edward was a founding member of various chapters, organizing conferences in every state he travelled through. He was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award in 2025 for his passion and commitment to the council and his field.

A man of many interests, Edward was an avid fan of Chicago’s storied sports franchises: the Bears, Cubs, and Blackhawks. Sports brought him joy and camaraderie, providing cherished moments with those he loved. Edward also had a deep affection for his pack of dogs, whose companionship brought him much happiness throughout his life.

Edward’s devotion to his family was steadfast. He is survived by his beloved wife of 47 years, Carol Cancio, his dear daughter Keely (Chris Fenasci) Cancio, and his cherished son Payton (Jessica) Cancio. His legacy also continues through his adoring grandchildren, Jett and Sammy. Edward’s love for his family was evident in every aspect of his life, and his memory will live on in their hearts.

He now joins in eternal rest his father, Eduardo Cancio, his mother, Maria Cancio, his sisters, Lourie and Anna, who preceded him in death.

Edward’s legacy is one of integrity, kindness, and dedication—traits reflected in both his professional accomplishments and his personal relationships. Those who knew him will remember his wisdom, his warmth, and his unwavering support.

Edward J. Cancio’s life was a journey marked by compassion, achievement, and love. He will be dearly missed, yet his influence will continue to inspire all those privileged to have known him.
