Listen to Obituary

Dr. Crystal R. Goveia, M.D. passed away peacefully on May 12, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of compassionate care, medical leadership, faith, and service to her family, patients, and community.

For more than four decades, Crystal dedicated her life to the practice of medicine and the advancement of family healthcare throughout Northwest Ohio. A board-certified physician in Pediatrics, Family Practice, and Geriatrics, she was respected not only for her medical expertise, but also for the kindness she brought to every patient encounter.

Crystal’s commitment to medicine was rooted in her family legacy. She was a fourth-generation physician and a third-generation female physician. Every member of her nuclear family also were physicians. She was the daughter of Drs. Anthony and Marie DeSouza and sister to Charmaine D’Souza (Derrick) of Denton, Texas, and Derek DeSouza (Sheila) of West Bloomfield, Michigan.

Throughout her distinguished career, Crystal served in numerous leadership positions at area hospitals and organizations, including Flower Hospital. She became the hospital’s first female Chief of the Medical Staff. She also served as Program Director and Director of Medical Education for the Family Practice Residency Program and Director of the Chemical Dependency Unit.

While Crystal was the Chief of Staff at Flower Hospital, she was part of the management task force that merged Flower and Toledo Hospitals to form ProMedica Health System and then served on their Board of Directors. She also served on the Board at St. Luke's Hospital and as Chair of the Patient Care Committee. Before her retirement, she practiced at Waterville Family Practice, where generations of families entrusted her with their care.

Crystal was committed to teaching and mentorship, serving as a Clinical Associate Professor in Family Medicine at the Medical College of Ohio. Colleagues and former students remember her as a gifted educator whose wisdom, professionalism, and encouragement influenced countless careers in medicine. She was also passionate about hospice care and believed strongly in every patient’s right to a peaceful end-of-life journey.

Beyond medicine, Crystal lived her Catholic faith with compassion for others. A devoted member of Saint John XXIII Catholic Community, she believed that faith was inseparable from service. Her faith guided her life and her practice of medicine.

Crystal is survived by her beloved husband of 55 years, Mario Goveia; her children, Vinita Gotting (Eric), Vijay Goveia (Claire), and Priya Cochran (Chris); and her cherished grandchildren, Isabella Goveia, Kaitlin Gotting, Lauren Gotting, Anya Goveia, Walker Cochran, Drake Cochran, and Reese Cochran.

She will be remembered for her intelligence, grace, strength, leadership, and profound dedication to caring for others. Her impact lives on through the physicians she trained, the colleagues she inspired, the patients she comforted, and the family she loved so deeply. She touched countless lives with compassion, wisdom, and faith, and she will be missed by those who had the privilege of knowing her.

Family and friends will be received at the Newcomer Funeral Home (Southwest Chapel), 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo on Friday, May 22, 2026 from 4:00-7:00PM. The Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2026 at 11:00AM at St. John XXIII Catholic Church, 24250 N. Dixie Hwy, Perrysburg, OH.
