Douglas R. Gillespie, beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on April 29, 2025, in Toledo, Ohio, where he was born on March 25, 1959. He dedicated 29 years of exemplary service to the Toledo Police Department, where he held various positions, notably within the Toledo Bomb Squad. His commitment to public safety and community service stands as a testament to his character and dedication to the city he cherished.

Douglas was not just a devoted officer; he was a loving family man. Married to his wife, Sue A. Gillespie, for 33 wonderful years, they created a life rich with love and laughter. He took great pride in being a father to his two daughters, Heidi Vansparrentak and her husband Andrew, and Holly Beck and her husband Theo. Furthermore, he delighted in being a grandfather to four cherished grandchildren: Magnus, Odin, Ava, and Sophia. His pride in his family was evident in everything he did, from spending quality time with them to sharing laughter and joy in their lives.

A man of many interests, Douglas was an artist at heart, expressing his creativity through oil painting and photography. His passion for aerobics showed his zest for life and wellness. Additionally, he enjoyed his time as a HAM radio operator, engaging in conversations that showcased his great sense of humor and welcoming nature. Dogs were a significant part of his life, and he cherished his beloved companions: Bailey Sue, Maggie Sue, and Allie Sue.

Douglas's generosity extended beyond his family; he often reached out to help those less fortunate in the Toledo community, exemplifying his caring spirit and deep compassion for others. He will be remembered for his laid-back demeanor and welcoming personality, traits that drew people to him and made him a cherished friend to many.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Sue; daughters Heidi and Holly; sons-in-law Andrew and Theo; grandchildren Magnus, Odin, Ava, and Sophia; brothers Kevin Gillespie and his wife Janice, and Jeffrey Gillespie and his wife Jen; sisters Deborah Gillespie and Jennifer Teachout; along with a host of nieces, nephews, other extended family, and dear friends.

Douglas was preceded in death by his father, Raymond Gillespie, and his mother, Joyce Bigney, step father Donald Bigney. His legacy lives on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him, and he will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of his company.

The family will be having a celebration of life at a later date.
