Dorothy M. Perryman Arney

Dorothy M. Perryman Arney ("Nanna") was born on July 28, 1937, in Hazen, Alabama, to John T. Perryman and Katie L. Flanagan (Flippen). She gained her heavenly wings and transitioned into eternal rest on Sunday, August 23, 2026, while under the loving care of her devoted granddaughter, Caniecia Edwards.

Dorothy moved to Toledo, Ohio, in 1949. She attended Jesup W. Scott High School and graduated in 1955. Throughout her life, she held various jobs, culminating in a 28-year career with DaimlerChrysler, where she retired in August 2000.

Retirement allowed Dorothy to dedicate much of her time to serving others. She volunteered with the Toledo Police RSVP Program (Retired Senior Volunteer Patrol) and the Village Keepers Community Relations Program. She was also an active member of the Margaret Hunt Center, the Mildred H. Gibson Center, and the Grass Roots Dart Club.

Dorothy's Christian journey began at an early age when she accepted Christ and joined Aimwell Baptist Church in Orrville, Alabama. After moving to Toledo, she became a longtime member of Southern Missionary Baptist Church, where she faithfully worshipped and enjoyed singing in the choir.

Dorothy had a passion for horse racing and loved visiting racetracks. One of her favorite events was the Kentucky Derby. She also enjoyed playing bingo, fishing, shopping, and traveling. In the early 1970s, she served as a Drill Team Leader for the Black Elks Lodge.

Dorothy was known for being straightforward and honest. She meant what she said and said what she meant, with no in-between. Her strength, authenticity, and unwavering spirit made a lasting impression on everyone who knew her.

She was preceded in death by her parents, John T. Perryman and Katie L. Flanagan (Flippen); her stepfather, Robert Flippen; sisters-in-law, Helen Harris and Roxie Hollins; and brothers-in-law, Lester, Luther, and Fred Arney.

Dorothy leaves to cherish her memory her five children: Edwina Perryman; Regina Arney of Columbus, Ohio; Samuel (Kim) Arney of Thailand; Darwin (Stephanie) Arney of Louisville, Kentucky; and Kimela (Victor) Taylor. She is also survived by her grandchildren: Caniecia (Marcus) Edwards, Julian Arney, Erin (Earnest) Arney-Poe, Austin Arney, and Blair Arney; her great-grandsons, K'Shaun (Tiffany) Gilmer and Elija "Big Earl" Poe; and her great-great-granddaughter, K'Lynn Gilmer.

She also leaves behind her special friends, Clairene Thompson and Bee Donald; her special neighbor and "daughter," Patty Conner; her former husband, Ervin Arney, to whom she was married for 24½ years; and her special son, Michael Pettaway.

The family would like to acknowledge the exceptional care provided by her granddaughter, Caniecia Edwards, as well as Parrish Health and its Hospice Team, including Nurses Kayla and Gina and Pastor Robert. Special thanks are also extended to Ms. Ashley, Ms. Maria, and Dale Wanda, whom Dorothy affectionately nicknamed "Dale Riggs," for their assistance and support in her care.

The family of Dorothy Arney is forever grateful for the many expressions of love, kindness, prayers, cards, flowers, and support received during this difficult time.

The family will receive guests Tuesday, September 8, 2026 from 9:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. at Newcomer SW Chapel, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900). The Funeral Service will begin Tuesday, September 8, 2026 at 10:00 a.m. in the funeral home with Pastor Timothy Pettaway officiating. Burial will follow at Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.
