Donald L. Brimmer, age 57, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away peacefully on April 2, 2026, at his home with his wife and children by his side. Born on June 6, 1968, his life was a testament to hard work, problem solving, and dedication to family. Don faced his battle with cancer courageously and with incredible strength.
He is survived by his wife of 27 years, Susan Brimmer; his children, Jillian Brimmer and Heather (Tristan) Bonde; his parents, David and Phyllis Brimmer; his siblings, Doug (Bambi) Brimmer and Deborah (David) Ferguson; as well as many nieces, nephews, and their children. He also leaves behind his beloved in-laws, William and Janice Huber, and his brother-in-law, Bill (Laurie) Huber, who was his best friend for over 40 years. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Mary, Walter, and Audrey Brimmer.
Don was an athlete in his youth, wrestling and playing football at Rogers High School, from which he graduated in 1986. Later in life, he became an Elevator Constructor and a proud member of the International Union of Elevator Constructors, Local 44. Don believed in integrity within the elevator industry and co-founded his own business with Scott Macy and Bill Huber, whom he considered brothers. His dedication to family extended to Wildwood Environmental Academy, where he served as PTO President for several years and coached sports.
Though Don was a big man who could intimidate at times, there was nothing bigger than his heart. Those who knew him witnessed his softer side: getting misty-eyed at weddings, singing Jimmy Buffett songs while making his famous waffles, and treating every one of his children’s friends as if they were his own.
While we are sad to lose Don, we take comfort knowing he is healed from his illness and waiting for us in Heaven. A visitation will be held at the Newcomer Funeral Home on King Road on April 10 from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., with a funeral service following at 4 p.m.
A scholarship fund is being established in Don’s name for students pursuing careers in the trades. Contributions can be made through Venmo (@Don-Brimmer-Scholarship) or check to the family.
