David J. Martin was born on July 9, 1968, in Toledo, Ohio, to the union of Vernon Martin and Donna C. Martin. He peacefully departed this life on Saturday, March 21, 2026. David will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
He leaves behind his beloved son, Joshua D. Martin-Hayden. David was preceded in death by his parents, Vernon and Donna Martin, and his siblings, Michael Martin and Christal Lawry.
David attended Start High School, where he was a standout athlete in both basketball and track & field, even holding a school record. He graduated in 1987 and continued his education at Lima Technical College, playing basketball and studying electrical engineering. He later attended Ohio State Barber College, where he became a master barber, perfecting his craft.
David’s passion for cutting hair began at a young age. Over the years, he worked in several salons and barbershops throughout Toledo before opening his own business, Donna C’s Cuts and Styles. For many years, David stood behind the barber’s chair not only as a skilled professional but as a trusted listener, storyteller, and friend. A visit with David was more than a haircut—it was an experience filled with laughter, reflection, and a sense of belonging.
Beyond the barbershop, David was a gifted musician and poet, known to many as “Delirious Dave.” He played multiple instruments and had a remarkable ability to create lyrics from memory. He produced music and collaborated with family and friends in his studio. David was also a member of Dirty 30, a Toledo-based rap group.
David had a deep appreciation for African art and was an avid collector. David had a great sense of style, he was an impeccable dresser. He also had a love for animals and cars, often enjoying car restoration shows. Known for his luck, especially when playing his numbers, David was generous and always shared his blessings with those around him.
David lived a life of purpose and fulfillment, achieving many of his goals. His greatest accomplishment and source of pride was his son, Joshua. One of the happiest moments of his life was witnessing Joshua graduate, an achievement he cherished deeply.
Joshua remembers his father as a man he wants the world to know as someone “who was more than music.”
David leaves behind a legacy of love, creativity, and connection. He will be forever remembered and honored by those who cherish his memory.
Leaving to cherish his memory his loving son Joshua D. Martin-Hayden, brother Melvin (Lerena) Martin, sisters Valerie Lewis, Sheila Martin, April Martin, Sherry (Ian) Coutain, and a host of nieces and nephews. A special thank you to all the family and friends who supported David during his time on earth.
