Darren G. Szykowny, age 57, of Toledo, Ohio, passed away Tuesday, November 4, 2025. Born and raised in Toledo, Darren was born December 13, 1967, the beloved son of Gerald “Jerry” and the late Caroline (Stephens) Szykowny.
A proud graduate of St. Francis De Sales and DeVilbis High Schools, Class of 1985, Darren was known for his vibrant spirit and love of music. He sang in the school choir and found joy in playing guitar, expressions of his creative soul that stayed with him throughout life.
Darren was a skilled mechanic by trade, who was not only respected for his dedication and craftsmanship, through his work he built many lifelong friendships and relationships. Outside of work, he lived life with passion and adventure. Darren was an avid bass fisherman, a competitive BMX racer, and a thrill-seeker who loved four-wheeling and off-roading. His heart was always drawn to the outdoors, especially during family trips to Michigan and Florida where he could fish and relax with loved ones.
A devoted NASCAR fan, Darren followed the careers of Dale Earnhardt Sr. and Jr. with enthusiasm. Some of his most cherished memories were attending races at Talladega, MIS and Bristol and the Mid-Ohio Race Track with his father, moments that brought him great joy.
Darren’s love extended deeply to his canine companions, especially Bud, who preceded him in death, and Coco, who remains a loyal friend to the family.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Caroline Szykowny. Darren is survived by his father, Gerald “Jerry” Szykowny; his brother, Russell (Jody) Szykowny; sisters, Paulette (Graden) Szykowny and Dawn Szykowny-Sommers; nephew, Grant; niece, Erica; and dear friends Gunner & Kelly Neilson and their children, Hannah, Abby, and Tyler, along with Louis Snyder.
