Listen to Obituary

Carol H. (Thomas) Frederick passed away March 11, 2026 in the arms of her loving family having fought the good fight against dementia. Born February 10, 1942 to Dr. C.J. and Helen Thomas, Carol attended schools in Royal Oak, Michigan and graduated from Kingswood School /Cranbrook in 1960. She attended Bowling Green State University where she met her future husband LaMar. Carol was an adventurous person making friends in many areas. She was active in obedience training for German Shepherd Dogs and a home room mother for her children. She followed and supported her children in all their activities including brownies, cub scouts, dance, horseback riding and hockey. She traveled coast-to-coast to show her German Shepherd Dogs, each of which had a special place in her heart. Four dogs became AKC champions with several others earning obedience awards.

She was appointed to and served on the Monroe County Social Services Board for more than 20 years, many as its chairperson. She was recognized by a formal Resolution from the County Board of Commissioners for her work on that Board. Carol was a true friend to at risk individuals, the homeless and their families. She was a fierce advocate against human trafficking and committed to work with local agencies to support the homeless. For her work in this area, she received the “Heroes for the Homeless Award,” a special one-of-a-kind tribute from the State of Michigan.

An avid gardener, she was awarded the Bedford Beautification Committee Yard of the Month. Her gardens were most beautiful in the early Spring with the multitude of bulbs, plants and trees all in bloom. She spent many hours tending her gardens with a trowel, dirty fingers and knees but reveled in what she accomplished and how her gardens flourished.

She was a cat person and was always adopting strays. She fed and cared for then throughout their lives.

She was a full-time mother to her son Jeff (Alison) and daughter Kris (Steve). She loved her grandchildren: Nate, Clara, Anna, Sophia and Michael and her great granddaughter Avery, never missing a birthday and special occasion card with a note for each. She was married to LaMar for 63 years.

A celebration of life of Carol's life shall be held on April 25, 2026 from 1p.m. - 4p.m. at Mancy's Italian on Monroe Street in Toledo.

We thank the staff at Kingston for their love and support during her stay and the staff of Hospice of Northwest Ohio for her care during her final days. In lieu of flowers, contributions in her name can be made to Paula’s House, Monroe, Michigan or Hospice of NW Ohio.
