Mr. Burl Clifford “Bud” Skiles, Jr., age 78, passed away peacefully on November 26, 2025, in Toledo, Ohio. Born on April 13, 1947, in Bono, Ohio, Bud lived a life marked by devotion—to his family, his faith, and his community.
A proud graduate of Clay High School, Bud went on to serve his country honorably as a member of the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. His commitment to service continued long after his military years through both his professional and personal life. He worked as a foreman for the City of Toledo Refuse Department, where he was known for his strong work ethic and leadership. After retiring from the City of Toledo he was employed by Promedica as a courier.
For 55 years, Bud shared a devoted marriage with his beloved wife Lucy Skiles. Together they built a family rooted in love and faith. He was a proud father to Chad Skiles; Brad Skiles and his wife Pam; and Amanda Emch and her husband Paul. His legacy continues through his cherished grandchildren: Alex Buchanan; Sydney Mills and her husband Chris; Clayton Skiles; Kennedy Skiles; Amber Sosbe and her husband Corey and Bobby Ries, Ethan Emch; Zayne Emch; Beckett A. Emch; Addyson Emch; Finn Emch; and Grayden Burl Emch. Bud also delighted in being a great-grandfather to Milo Mills, Theo Mills, Harper Sosbe, and Hudson Sosbe.
Family meant everything to Bud. He is also remembered with love by his sisters Cookie Sullivan and her husband John, Bootsie Foster, and his supportive brother Cliff Skiles. Among many nieces and nephews who adored him as “Uncle Bud,” he shared a special bond with his favorite niece Dorsha Skiles.
He was preceded in death by his parents Opal and Burl Skiles Sr.; siblings Annie Mercer, Louie Skiles, Glenn Skiles; and nieces and nephews Patrice Skiles, Clifford W. Skiles, and Brandy Bird Williams.
Bud’s life was deeply shaped by faith. He loved Jesus wholeheartedly and made it his mission to share that love with everyone he met. Whether through Friday morning Bible studies or volunteering at the local jail to visit inmates—offering them encouragement and hope—Bud lived out the gospel in word and deed. Over the years he served in many ministries that reflected his heart for others.
One of Bud’s greatest joys was being “Papa.” He rarely missed an event involving one of his grandchildren—whether it was a game, recital, or school function—and took every opportunity to teach them how to work hard and love others well.
A funeral service celebrating Bud’s life will be held at Monclova Rd Baptist Church 12/3/25 at noon.
