Bernie Church, a man of quiet strength and enduring patience, passed away peacefully on March 18, 2026, in Waterville, Ohio. Born on June 30, 1937, in Terre Haute, Indiana, Bernie lived a life defined by his gentle nature, steadfast dedication to family, and a profound love for the simple joys found in nature and craftsmanship.
Bernie was a devoted husband, having shared 43 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Gail Church. Together, they nurtured a family that included his children Cory Church and his wife Lori, Timothy Church, and Christina Church. Bernie also took great pride in his blended family, which included two stepsons, David Church and his wife Pat, as well as Carl Church and his wife Patti. His legacy extends through many grandchildren and great-grandchildren, all of whom carry forward the warmth and kindness that Bernie so generously embodied.
A patriot at heart, Bernie honorably served his country in the U.S. Army during the period between the Korean War and the Vietnam War. His military service spoke to his character—quietly courageous and unwaveringly committed.
Bernie was a true tinkerer at heart, a man who found joy in fixing things and tending to plants of every kind, a passion that brought life and color to his surroundings. Always a nature enthusiast, he loved riding his bicycle throughout Point Place, cherishing the peace and connection to nature that these moments afforded him. His compassionate spirit extended to his love for dogs, companions who mirrored his loyalty and gentle presence.
He was the last surviving member of five siblings, a testament to the long line of resilience and quiet dignity that ran through his family.
Bernie Church’s life was a testament to the beauty of a humble existence filled with love, service, and a deep appreciation for the world around him. Though he spoke little, his actions and steadfast nature resonated loudly with all who knew him. He leaves behind a family deeply grateful for his example and presence, and a community enriched by his gentle soul.
He will be remembered with great respect, admiration, and love. Bernie’s legacy of patience, care, and quiet strength will endure in the hearts of his family and all who were fortunate enough to know him.
Gail wanted to share a special thank you to April and Patty at Ayden Healthcare of Waterville along with the many other caring staff there. Vanessa from Heartland Hospice also has a special place in the family's heart for your love, care, and support.
