Listen to Obituary

Barbara Sue “Susie” (Kern) Owen, a resident of Oregon, Ohio, passed away peacefully at age 74 on September 28, 2026. She was born in Bowling Green, Ohio, to John "Jack" and Donna Kern and grew up in Walbridge, Ohio.

Barb was the kindest, most caring person you could ever meet and was known for her fun-loving spirit and her big heart. She loved her family and was a proud mom and grandma (Ninnie). She loved spending time playing bingo at the senior center and attending potlucks with her friends in the community room at her apartment complex. She was always up for a game of Dominoes, Uno, War, and most recently Yahtzee with anyone who would play with her on her Grand Pad. She enjoyed video chatting with her daughter, son-in-law and grandson and her friends as well as sharing the Grand Pad “joke of the day” to anyone who would listen. Barb had a wonderful sense of humor and was always willing to laugh at a joke, even if it was at her own expense. Every Christmas you could plan to get beat by her in a friendly game of checkers, only occasionally being beaten by her brother, John. At one point in her life, she earned a little extra money as a Notary Public, and she very much enjoyed bowling every week in a league. When she could make it, she loved attending church services in Bowling Green or Lima, Ohio. She never tired of watching old reruns on TV in her own apartment, of which she was so proud. At a holiday or event at the senior center she could be seen wearing a big fun hat or a mask for Halloween. Her favorite article of clothing to wear was her “Best Grandma Ever” sweatshirt. One of her favorite holiday traditions was going to the lights at the Toledo Zoo with her sister, daughter, son-in-law, and grandson.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Sarah and Ken Coppens, her grandchildren Owen and Kinsey, her sister Sally (Richard) Berglund, and her brother John Kern.

She was preceded in death by her mother and father.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor her memory are invited to contribute to the family’s funeral and memorial fund. Contributions will help with funeral expenses and the planting of a beautiful, long-living tree in her memory, a place where her family, especially “Grandma’s little angels,” can gather, remember her and hear fun stories about her and watch her memory continue to grow for generations to come.

We had a game, we had a laugh, and we had each other.

Services for Barb will be private, she will be laid to rest at Limestone Cemetery in Graytown, Ohio.
