Listen to Obituary

With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Anthony D. Armstrong, lovingly known as Tony, who departed this life on July 1, 2026, in Toledo, Ohio. Born on March 26, 1959, in Detroit, Michigan, Tony’s journey was defined not only by the years he lived, but by the love, laughter, and steadfastness he brought to every day of his sixty-seven years.

A proud son of Detroit, Tony carried his roots and his sense of humor wherever he went. He graduated from Woodward High School, class of 1978—a milestone that marked the beginning of a life of commitment and diligence. Soon after, he answered a higher calling, serving his country with pride as a member of the U.S. Navy. His military years helped shape the discipline and grit that were so much a part of who he was.

Anthony’s work ethic carried him through decades at Libbey Glass Company, where he offered not only his skilled hands but his warmth and wit to his coworkers. He retired from Libbey Glass Company in 2020, closing out a chapter of loyalty and dedication that mirrored his approach to all aspects of his life.

Those who knew Tony well remember him as a good provider, a man who always made sure his wife, Cheryl, was cared for and his family’s needs were met. In his role as husband, father, stepfather, brother, and friend, Tony’s presence was a comfort, his laughter lifting the spirits of all who gathered in his company. His devotion to Cheryl, his loving wife, was ever-apparent; she was the heart of his world, and he made sure she always felt cherished.

Tony’s pride and joy blossomed in the time he spent with his loved ones—especially his 16 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. He adored his family, treasuring every moment at family cookouts, during the holidays, or simply tending to his garden and neatly kept yard while children played and stories were told. Grilling was one of his delights, bringing people together with the aroma of good food and the sound of shared laughter.

Family gatherings at the Armstrong home were marked by Tony's fun-loving, happy spirit. Even his stubborn streak became endearing, often a source of amusing stories and gentle ribbing among those who knew him best. Tony’s love for music and reading filled his quieter days. He enjoyed relaxing in front of the television, never missing a chance to grumble at the news, all while his easy smile and quick wit made even complaints seem like shared jokes.

He is survived by his devoted wife Cheryl, whose happiness was always his priority. His children Sha'lise Jones, David Armstrong and his wife Madelyn, Lateasha VanDeVelde and her husband Anthony, Arlee Armstrong, Shaquille Armstrong, and Autumn Armstrong carry forward his legacy of strength, kindness, and humor. Tony’s love also expanded to embrace his step-children Helen Lawrence, A'Isha Lawrence, and Terrance Allen, who benefitted deeply from his guidance and steadiness. His brothers Robert Taylor, James Taylor, Michael Harris, Wayne Harris, Gregory Harris, and Charles Harris recall a sibling whose laughter and light will be so dearly missed. Additionally, Rhonda Marsha, his god-sister, mourns his loss.

Tony was predeceased by his beloved grandson, Juquan Jackson, whom he held close in his heart always. Though Juquan is gone, the love between grandfather and grandson remains an unbroken bond, carried forward in memory. He was also preceded by his parents, Robert Harris and Joan C. Hawkins.

The tapestry of Anthony D. Armstrong’s life is woven with values of loyalty, hard work, humor, and boundless love. From tending his gardens to keeping the yard pristine, from offering the best seat at the barbecue to providing wisdom and warmth, Tony touched countless lives. His fun-loving nature, his resolve, and his joy for life will be felt by all who knew him, for years to come.

Though we grieve his passing, we gather in gratitude for the joy he brought into the world and the difference he made in each of our lives. His legacy is alive in every smile, every lesson, every cherished memory we hold.

Services to celebrate Tony’s life will be shared with family and friends as arrangements are made. As we say goodbye, we do so with love, honor, and immense gratitude for all that he gave us in his extraordinary journey.
