Achhar was a civil engineer by profession and came to the United States in 1956 for higher education. He graduated from Auburn University with a Bachelor of Science in 3 years and returned to Punjab, India. He joined Civil Engineering Department in Punjab and eventually rose to the position of Superintending Engineer. He was meticulous, punctual at his job and expected the highest standard from his employees. He was a Stickler for detail and perfection. He was also known for his honesty and kindness. He was known to go out of his way to help others in need and find jobs for those when unemployment in India was high. People still remember him and say "he was a hard act to follow". Even when he was India, his admiration, for the United States never diminished. He truly believed the United States was the land of opportunity and wanted his children to grow up in the United States. He encouraged his children to pursue higher education and with his efforts raised 5 successful children and their families. He encouraged his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren to work hard and do their best.
Over the years, Jaswant (wife) and Achhar developed interest in public service and in helping people and friends and strangers in need. They would donate generously towards these goals and also encouraged their children to pursue these causes of 'helping others'. He would often say "money is nothing" or "Khali haath ayee, khali haath jana hai" (you came empty handed in this world and you will leave empty handed from this world).
Whether it be working on a project, constructing/designing a building or helping others, Achhar always liked to push the limits of his efforts. He loved life and wanted to see his grandchildren and great-grandchildren grow up and be happy and successful. He was born on April 14, 1927 and died on April 14, 2026 at the age of 99.
If you were a Cricket fan, you would be disappointed that he missed a century by 1 run. But if you were measuring success in life, one would say that he achieved a century much earlier in life.
His compassion and interest in others will be missed and cherished by all.
