Shirish M. Shah
September 27, 1947 – May 27, 2023

In loving memory of Dr. Shirish Shah, we bid farewell to a remarkable man whose impact reached far and wide. As we celebrate his life and the memories we cherish, we take solace in knowing that his legacy will forever live on in the hearts and minds of those he touched.

Shirish passed away on May 27, 2023 surrounded by his family after a prolonged battle with prostate cancer. He is survived by his loving wife, Rekha Shah, children Niraj & Kavita Shah and Priya Shah & Arun Palakurthy, brother Pravin Shah, brothers-in-law Anil, Deepak, and Ashok Shah, sister Shanti Patel, 4 grandchildren Reva, Ariana, Satya, and Keya, and his numerous close friends who became family.

Shirish was born in Nardipur, India, to Manilal Shah, a textiles merchant, and Kanta Shah, a homemaker. He was the youngest and most michievous of three sons, but still dedicated to his education. Shirish had a natural affinity for mechanical systems, and originally planned to study engineering, but was convinced to pursue medicine by his chemistry professor. In 1973 Shirish left India to pursue a residency in obstretrics and gynecology in Toledo, Ohio. Like so many of his generation of the Indian diaspora, he arrived in the US with two suitcases, 8 dollars, and a few phone numbers of family and friends.

Shirish had originally come to the US for medical training that he wanted to bring back to India. During his residency at Medical College of Ohio he was welcomed by the people of Northwest Ohio – they showed kindness and generosity to a young man with an accent and far from his family. He soon knew Toledo would be his home and wanted his own children to have the opportunities he could not provide in India. In 1975, Shirish went back to India to marry Rekha Shah. They returned to Toledo together and began planting their roots.

He started his own private practice in obstetrics and gynecology in 1979. Shirish loved his job, and often took his kids with him on weekend rounds. They would pass time with the wonderful nurses who became extended family. By 1995 Shirish had delivered over 5,000 babies and stopped counting. He provided essential health care to countless Toledo women through his position at Planned Parenthood, was a favorite among residents for his passion for teaching, and traveled to Africa, South America, and Southeast Asia to teach physicians obstretric and gynecological advances. His fondest stories from “the field” include successfully delivering a healthy set of triplets, and helping a pregnant woman delay her labor on an international flight until they were able to land.

At home, Shirish was known for his work ethic, and his do-it-yourself, can-do approach to all things. Sunday mornings usually involved waking up his children by blasting Bollywood music while he ironed his work shirts for the following week. Shirish never called a repair man, and was the first person his adult children called to get advice on a leaky faucet, funny sound from the car, or a broken dishwasher. He had a work-hard, play-hard philosophy. He was the life of the party, and he was always ready for dinner at Ventura’s.

As we bid farewell to our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, let us honor his memory by embracing his work ethic, resilience, and his unyielding belief in the pursuit of dreams. He was a self-made man, but also self-less in his generosity. May his spirit guide us as we continue our own journeys, seeking to make a difference in the world, just as he did.

Though his physical presence may be gone, the impact of his love, wisdom, and laughter will continue to resonate in our lives. Rest in peace, dear Shirish, knowing that you have left an indelible mark on our hearts.

The family will receive guest on Sunday May 28, 2023 from 8:30-9:15 a.m. Newcomer Funeral Home, West Sylvania Chapel 3655 King Rd (419-392-9500).
