1950 - 2023

Michael “Big Mike” Hooton, age 73, of Toledo, passed away peacefully Thursday, May 25, 2023 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo surrounded by his loving family. He was born on April 8, 1950 to Everette and Alice (Brown) Hooton in Toledo. Mike was a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard proudly serving in the Vietnam War. He worked as a roofer for many years at Rembrandt Roofing. Mike was also a member of the Roofers Local Union #134. Big Mike enjoyed hanging in Sawicki parking lot drinking beer with friends and family. He loved his family deeply, was always protecting those he loved, and his son Ryan was his whole world. He was an avid fan of The Ohio State Buckeyes and was a very simple man. Big Mike was a calm gentle giant, and his smile, spirit and caring nature will truly be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Mike is survived by his son, Ryan (Kayleigh) Hooton; grandchildren, Caleb and Everly Hooton; siblings, Wanda (Jim) Baehr, Linda Pressler, Gary Hooton, Greg Hooton, Denny (Karen Laughtner) Leedy, Kevin Hooton, Heidi (Tom) Wiehe and Tammy (Dave) Tyburski; former spouse and friend, Janelle Hooton; nieces and nephews, Joe (Crystal) Allen, Pam Bond, Jenny (Matt) Carpenter, David (Rosey) Hooton, Eric Hooton, Heather Hooton, Jared Hooton, Autumn (Rick) Neri, Carrie (Ed) Leedy, Nicole (Patrick) Miller, Alexa Leedy, Chris Mazor, Danielle Towles, Tara (Jeff) Penn, Sara (Taylor Hedges) Wood, and Chase Wood; great nieces and great-nephews, Jordan, Xander, Cameron, Catey, Lindsey, Dani, Michael, Travis, Ryan, Jesse, Jared Jr., Nikolai, Kayla, Makayla, Joshua, Jayden, Madeline, Andrea, James, Jordan, Dean, Wesley, Penelope, Raylen, Paisley, Noah and Colton; extended family, Wendy and Lindsey LaCourse, Jack and Kim Berger, Debbie Berger, Barb and Jim Benson, Larry Berger, Sue Onisko, David Jasinkowski, Randy Varwig, and Jack Navarre; and many dear friends.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his niece, Courtney Hooton; grandson, Dominic Hooton; in-laws, Bill and Rose Wright; and extended family, Dana LaCourse, Herman and Evelyn Berger, Tim Berger, Joe Berger, Brad Fofrich, and Gary Ashton.

The family will receive guests on Tuesday, May 30, 2023 from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home – Northwest Chapel, 4150 W. Laskey Rd., Toledo (419-473-0300) with Funeral Services beginning at 4:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
