1992 - 2022

Hakeem Terrell Gates, affectionately known as Big Red, was born on October 1, 1992 in Helena, Arkansas. He departed this early life July 23, 2022 at his home. Hakeem received his education at Woodward High School and Horizon Academy in Toledo, Ohio. Hakeem enjoyed life. He loved music and he especially loved God. Hakeem worked when and wherever he could, working in many fields of occupation. He loved his family and friends dearly. Big Red would always say “don’t worry about me, I’m fine.” Hakeem lived a good life. Hakeem understood the assignment that God had for him, and he accepted Christ as his Personal Savior at an early age at Covenant of Zion Church in Little Rock, Arkansas. He continued his faith through his move to Toledo, Ohio under the leadership of Bishop Charles S.E. Williams.

Hakeem was preceded in death by his grandmothers, Senora Willis, great-grandmother, Elnora Kendricks, Opheila Gates and Lizzie McDaniel; and aunts, T. Helen James, Mary Lou, and Dorothy. He leaves to cherish his memory his mother, Courtney Brewer; step-mother, Denease Brewer; sisters, Dineisha Williams, Jasmine Gates, and Oneisha Williams; and brothers, Dimitri Gates and Semaja Brewer, all of Toledo, Ohio. Also surviving are his great-aunts, Berdine Nicholson and Rita Kendricks; aunt, Renita Richardson; uncles, James Brewer and James Baker; favorite cousin, Charles Hair; and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.

The family will receive guests on August 13, 2022 from 4:00 pm – 5:00 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home – Northwest Chapel, 4150 W. Laskey Rd, Toledo (419-473-0300) with a funeral service beginning at 5:00 pm in the funeral home.
