Helga passed away peacefully October 26, 2021, with her loving daughter Patricia by her side.
I would like to thank Hospice of Northwest Ohio for their compassionate care.
Helga will be greatly missed and warmly remembered by all who knew her. Many have stated it was a privilege to have known Helga.
Helga was born October 12th, 1942, in Karlsruhe Germany, delivered by a midwife at home. Hospitals were filled with war wounded from previous bombing attacks in September.
Karlsruhe had around 135 air raid, 13 major and the heaviest being 12/4/1944, in which planes dropped heavy aerial mines, incendiary and explosive bombs, creating destruction of Karlsruhe. The building her family were living in was hit and destroyed. Her family ran for their lives and survived.
Helga immigrated to America in 1960 and became a naturalized citizen in 1964. She was chosen to read her speech “Why I Became an American” at the naturalization ceremony.
Helga was very close to her brothers Horst, Karlsruhe, Germany, who passed 2017 and Karl- Heinz, Ettlingen, Germany.
Helga and her daughter enjoyed vacations to Germany and other European countries. However, Helga’s favorite spot was Asheville, North Carolina, because she loved its southern hospitality.
Helga enjoyed speaking with everyone she encountered, her quick wit and humor made every conversation an amazing experience. She could attract a crowd and people would thank her for the best conversation they’ve had in a long time.
Helga was full of life, spending time in the yard enjoying the beautiful flower gardens and going for daily walks.
I have asked my Uncle Karl Heinz to write a story in German about my mother when she was a child.

Im Korridor unserer kleinen Wohnung stand ein schmales, niedriges Regal. Darauf lag eines schönen Tages unser leuchtend grüner Spielball, der so herrlich springen konnte, und - leichtsinnigerweise - lag da noch ein ganz normaler eisemer Nagel. Diese beiden Dinge weckten großes Interesse bei Helga:,, Was kann ich damit tun?", dachte sie damals vermutlich, so oder ähnlich.
Der kleine grüne Ball hatte irgendwo in seiner Htülle ein kleines Loch, das aber verschlossen war von den Leuten, die den Ball hergestellt hatten, nach dem sie eine ausreichende Menge Luft hineingepumpt hatten. Die Luft in ihm war das Geheimnis, dass er so wunderbar hoch springen konnte. Dieses Geheimnis wollte Helga lösen. Sie arbeitete solange an der kleinen Öffnung mit Hilfe des Nagels bis die Luft entweichen konnte. Das war das Ende der guten Eigenschaft unseres Spielzeuges.
Später fand ich den luftleeren Ball und ich sprach mit Helga über dieses Angelegenheit. lhre Antwort kam schnell und überzeugend: ,,Du hättest den Ball niemals dort hinlegen dürfen! Dann hätte ich es nicht tun können!"
Ja, Helga war stets schnell und präzise in ihren Antworten, damals als Kind und später im Leben als erwachsene Person.
