Stephan hired me as an assistant prosecutor in Summit County in 1971 right out of law school. Two years later he called me into his office and said he was laying me off due to budget costs when I asked him "why me" he said I was ready to begin my private practice and it was time for me to get out on my own. He was right I've had good practice here in Akron for nearly 50 years and I owe my start to him. Rest in peace he was a bull dog.

Dear Nancy and family,
My prayers and thoughts are with you at this time. I grew up with Stephan (Gabby) in Akron, and every Friday night we had bible studies with Father Glocar. After bible studies, we had a lot of fun playing games and doing Serbian dances. All of our Serbian friends got together every Friday, including his sisters, and we were all teenagers at the time. I have very happy memories of Gabby and will continue to keep him in my prayers.

We are saddened to hear of Stephan's passing. We were fortunate enough to have worked with Stephan providing court reporting services when he worked as a personal injury attorney with the Cubbons. He was always so respectful, kind and a pleasure to work with. We were disappointed when he retired from law, but happy that he could pursue his other interests. May he rest in peace. - Kim Collins

I am writing this message for my dad, Milan Jurich, who first met Stephan and Nancy at the Alexis Gardens retirement community, and formed a friendship that continued after they moved to the Woodlands community. They shared a Serbian ethnicity, and my dad always appreciated supplementing his Serbian vocabulary with new words Stephan would teach him. Sending our family's condolences to your family.
(Spoken by my dad):
My dear Serbian brother Stephan,
I will always appreciate you and the additional Serbian language you provided me with.
I will miss you dearly!
tvoj brat Srbin, (your Serb brother)

Was incredibly lucky to have such a fascinating and fun-loving uncle, who also helped inspire me to tackle challenges (He gave me "The Raven" to read as an 11 year old). Thank you, Uncle Gabby! Love to Aunt Nancy and my inspiring cousins, Marko and Shanno.

Stephan gave me my first job as an Atty. He was a great guy. I will always remember him as a good person and a good role for all Attys. He will be missed..

Nancy,
Mary Sue and I send our deepest sympathies to you and your family. Stephan was a remarkable man, a Renaissance man, who did everything well and with great passion. He will be missed by many. Although we have not seen each other much since Stephan’s retirement from the law profession, I have thought of you both while sitting on your bench in “the deep dark woods” of the Ability Center, while watching my grandsons.
Be well.

Sincere condolences to Nancy and Stephan’s family. You were among the eight of us to transition from Alexis Gardens to The Woodlands. I enjoyed so many meals together and spirited political discussions. Always informed, thoughtful and caring, we will miss you Stephan. You shared with me some of your medical history and I am awed at your courage and determination as a child and again when faced with similar challenges recently. Rest In Peace, dear friend!

Such a loss. My deepest sympathies to the Gabalac family. Altho we haven't been in touch in recent years I have vivid memories and feelings about our times together. Stephan was a creative, forthright, honest, intense, clever, unique, fun, challenging person. Best boss ever. I will miss knowing he is out there. I miss you all. I have lost your address and phone. Call if you want to reconnect.

Dear Gabalac Family All,
Seeing this today took my breath away as Stephan Gabalac was, in my mind, a most human but brilliant being who would quite possibly manage to transend earthly time limits, as he seemed to clear every hurdle/obstacle presented when I was fortunate enough to work for him as a criminal investigator (1974-1980) during his time as Summit County Prosecutor. He always gave a listening ear and was willing dialogue and thoroughly examine any ideas presented, with the understanding, of course, that the final decision always had consequences for good or naught. His family was the gold standard he held to and I pray his years were good to him. God bless you all. Mary Kimberlin (Barron/Kalmar)

I am very sorry for your family’s loss. I never met Stephan, but my mother thought the world of him and Nancy during their time at Alexis Arms together. I worked closely with Marko and it was obvious how much Stephan meant to his family. Your family is in my thoughts and you have my deepest sympathy.

Stephan gave me my start in law enforcement when I was hired as an investigator on his economic crime unit known as the Fraud Squad. I was fresh out of the Marine Corps in 1977 and was a member of his team until 1979 when I was hired by the Tallmadge Police dept. from which I retired. I will always remember him as a professional, fair , and relentless in his pursuit of justice for victims of crime. He also had a great sense of humor and could be approached for advice about law related or personal matters. My condolences to all of his family members and friends.

Saddened to hear of his passing. I enjoyed working with him at Cubbon and he always had a smile on his face and a twinkle in his eye - he made people's days with his jokes and stories. My deepest condolences to his family.

Condolences to the family of Mr. Gabalac. I remember him from my family and city officials, articles in the Beacon. Those were great times back then. Rest Peacefully.

When I returned to Akron in 1970 to take a job as a reporter and later news director at WHLO radio, Stephan was a big part of my professional life. He was a regular source, making news with a number of innovative initiatives, such as the Career Criminal program and the Consumer "Fraud Squad." He assembled a staff of real professionals in the Prosecutor's office, and was certainly one of the most creative people to ever hold the office. Among public officeholders, no one was as much fun as he was - with an enormous appetite for news, literature, music, and innovations in the law. In 1974, he was key to our winning a Silver Gavel Award from the American Bar Association for a series we produced on the grand jury system. Unavoidably inserted into the maelstrom created by the Beacon Journal in 1980, the Greater Akron community was poorer after his departure. Condolences to Nancy and family.

So sorry for your loss and grateful that we were able to stop and see him last week. Lots of good times and good food were shared. Wonderful memories are left behind. With love, Carol and Ken.

Our hearts go out to Nancy, Shanno and Marko on the loss of Stephan. We've been friends for many years especially when Nancy and Stephan lived in Akron. He was a true Renaissance Man with many talents and interests. We are all diminished by his passing but hold him in our memories and the family in our hearts.
Love, Denise and Jim

Stephan and Nancy are wonderful people! They were always totally devoted to one another and absolutely personified the "Oberlin attitude". Nancy and I went to graduate school together and continue to enjoy a friendship. I remember fondly sitting at their kitchen table on Jodore and enjoying a wonderful meal prepared by Stephan, and then touring his garden. Afterwards he would play his guitar and sing ,or the two of them would regale us with funny stories. They played off one another like Abbott and Costello. They were so proud of Marko and Shanno and always had updates on their activities. This continued when Sean and Gina came along. The visits always passed quickly, because they were so knowledgeable about so many things. Stephan was a champion of justice and fought for womens' rights before it was in "vogue" to do so. Stephan was indeed a Renaissance man and I miss him already.
