1931 - 2023

Mary Julian Maris of Sylvania, Ohio passed away on February 1, 2023 in Sylvania, Ohio at the age of 91.

Mary was born in Cairo, Illinois to Scott and Judith Julian on June 14, 1931. She graduated from the University of Illinois in 1952 with a degree in speech pathology. She married John K. Maris on December 27, 1952 in Memphis, Tennessee. For many years, she worked as a speech therapist and with the learning disabled in the Toledo school system. In later years, she volunteered at Flower Hospital where she became fast friends with coworkers with whom she loved to share some wine after work. She also volunteered at Ludington Hospital. She was an avid bridge player and was especially fond of and excelled at duplicate bridge. She sometimes played bridge online and believed that at one point she may have been in a game with Bill Gates and Warren Buffett (all players were anonymous).

Mary was a kind and loving soul who inspired love in others. She would strike up conversations while waiting in line at the grocery or bank. People responded to her warmth, sincerity and humor. She was also adventurous, traveling all over the world with her husband and close family friends. When not traveling, she loved to cook and she leaves behind children that can not reproduce her extraordinary brisket, secret gravy, or fried chicken, among other things. Perhaps her favorite place on earth was her vacation home on Lake Michigan near Pentwater. Cherished family vacations were spent there overlooking the singing sands and the vast lake.

Following a stroke in 2016, Mary spent her remaining years at Sunset Village in Sylvania, Ohio. She loved many of the staff and her family are eternally grateful for the kindness, love and care she received there. A special thanks to Denise, Jodie, Muni, Steven , Tracy, Dawn, Lindsey, and Lindsay. Another special thanks to the Ashanti Hospice crew that helped Mary and her family at the end.

Mary is survived by her children and their spouses: Kristen (Maris) Chapman, Scott and Tracey (Walker) Maris, and John and Ewa (Skarbinski) Maris. Her grandchildren and their spouses: Meghan (Chapman) and David Weinberg, Kate (Chapman) and Jacob Leite, and David Chapman; Emily Maris and Daniel Jeung, Louise (Maris) and Andrew Faiella; Alexa and Sierra Maris. Her great grandchildren: Jay and Eliot Weinberg; Benjamin and Mary Eliza Rose Leite; Millicent and Fred Faiella.

Mary is preceded in death by her beloved husband John Maris, her brother Scott Julian, and her son in law Curt Chapman.
