Herman Lester "Sonny" Essig, Jr.
1934 - 2022

Herman Lester “Sonny” Essig, Jr., age 88, passed away peacefully November 29, 2022 at Ebeid Hospice Residence in Sylvania. He was born August 19, 1934 to Herman Sr. and Esther (Nerhing) Essig in Bridgman, Michigan. Herman was a wonderful, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend to all. His love of life and positive outlook was infectious to all of those around him.

Herman was blessed to live the last 18 months at Hickory Ridge of Temperance, MI; where he considered all the staff and residents his family. The care he received and friendships he made brought him much joy and happiness.

Herman was also a Dialysis patient at U.S. Renal Care at Alexis and Jackman for 4.5 years. He received excellent care and formed long lasting friendships with staff and patients as well.

Some of Herman’s greatest joys were cooking, being in nature, and golfing. He loved nothing more than spending time at family gatherings and all of his grandchildren. His smile, spirit and caring nature will truly be missed by all.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife of 57 years, Wyvetta; daughters, Kimberly Mardini-Channer and Alyson Wagner; granddaughter, Becki McIntire; great-granddaughter, Nora Newton; 1 sister; and 4 brothers.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving children, Wava (Gene) Smedlund, Mike (Libby) Essig and Stacey Stubblefield; sons-in-law, Brennan Channer and Richard Wagner; grandchildren, Angie (Mike) Karpinko, Nikki (Sam) Furney-Jeremy, Gene Smedlund III, Katye (Steven) Smedlund-Ruetz, Alyc (Aaron) Packard, Jordan Lynch, Zak Stubblefield, Sam (Rachel) Mardini, Andréa (Quinton) Newton, Abby Channer, Logan Channer, Amiee Adsit, and Matt Adsit; great-grandchildren, Makayla, Hayden, Evelyn, Gene IV, Jaxton, Emma, Savannah, Peter, Eliza, Korbin, Laryssa, Lynnae, Gage, Makenna and Maverick; sisters, Karen (Richard) Gorski and Marva Sue Lower; and many nieces, nephews and dear friends.

A Celebration of Life for Herman will be held in the summer of 2023. Newcomer Funeral Home – Northwest Chapel, 419-473-0300 assisted the family with professional services.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Nightingales Harvest, 2820 W. Alexis Rd., Toledo, OH 43613.

Herman will be remembered for lighting up a room with his presence. He was always ready with a song to sing and a compliment to pay. Herman will be greatly missed by all of his family and friends. The loss will forever leave a big void in our hearts.
