In Memory Of
Joyce Sandra Turner
1946 - 2021

Joyce Sandra Turner lived a blessed and prosperous life. She loved her family dearly and cherished her church family.

God blessed us with Joyce on March 12th, 1946. She was the youngest daughter of
William and Sadie Myers McCord.

Joyce grew up in Stamford, CT. She was a devoted student who graduated from
Stamford High School and enjoyed singing in a local gospel singing group. She came to know the Lord as a preteen and spent a lifetime in service to her church community. She attended Wilson Memorial COGIC under the leadership of Bishop C.H. Brewer in Stamford, CT and James Temple COGIC in Cincinnati, OH under the leadership of the late Bishop William James Sr. After moving to Toledo, Ohio, Joyce joined St. James
Holiness COGIC/ WinWorld Ministries under the leadership of the late Bishop William James Sr. and Dr. William James Jr respectively. She remained faithful to this ministry until the time of her death. Sis. Turner served as a Deaconess, an Elder’s wife, a choir member, a Care Team member, and a member of the Hospitality Team.

Through the St. James Holiness COGIC Fellowship, she met Wilbert Turner Sr. in 1976. They married in April 1977. Through their union, Joyce gained four daughters and later gave birth to 5 children.

Joyce valued higher education and her career. She received a Bachelor of Sociology degree from Central State University and a Masters of Social Work from Wayne State University. Joyce proudly worked as a United States Probation Officer for 25 years within the Federal Court System eventually retiring as a Supervising Probation Officer in 2003. She later served as a Mediator for the Lucas County Juvenile Court.

Joyce was known in her community for her warm hospitality and her joyous sense of humor. She served as a Girl Scout leader at Mt. Pilgrim Baptist church where her children participated in the scouting program. Over the years, Joyce could be spotted about town in her minivan driving her children and their friends to school events, delivering meals to the bereaved, making hospitality visits to the elderly, and spending quality time with her grandchildren or goddaughter. She was a great cook and used her skillful cooking abilities to prepare countless meals for family and friends, co-workers, and the friends of her children. She was well known for her macaroni & cheese, candied sweets, and chocolate chip cookies.

Joyce’s hobbies included singing, writing poetry, maintaining her garden, and participating in her weekly Bible Study group. She especially enjoyed group gatherings with the “ Golden Godly Girls”. Additionally, one could always expect Joyce to have her camera ready to capture special moments. Joyce was especially fond of traveling. She enjoyed annual family vacations around the country and special Carribean getaways with her husband. She traveled extensively domestically and overseas to locations including Hawaii, United Kingdom, Australia, Turkey, and Israel. Joyce encouraged and empowered her children to follow their passions throughout the country and abroad and was certain to come and visit them wherever they lived.
