1921 - 2018

Gustena “Mama Bates” Bates, age 97, of Toledo, passed away peacefully Thursday, November 29, 2018 at the Manor at Perrysburg with loving family by her side. She was born November 9, 1921 to Elijah Sr. and Lula Williams in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Gustena was a faithful member and minister of Shiloh A.F.T Apostolic Church for over 50 years. She enjoyed singing, music, fishing, and shopping. Gustena was known for her cooking, especially her “dixie dogs”, her cornbread and her sweet potato pie. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Anderson “Cowboy” Bates; brothers, Elijah Jr. “Manny” and Calvin Williams; and sister, Earline Harris. Gustena is survived by her grandson, Darryl “Timothy” Hunter; granddaughter, Cheryl Bates; loving goddaughter, Arlinda (Gary) Capello; nieces, Olga Ruth Jackson and Marian Wilson; grand-niece, Trudy Wilson; special dear friends, Cora Hychs, Shirley (L.S.) Conerly and Helen Henderson; many nieces, nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.

The family will receive guests on Saturday, December 8, 2018 from 10 – 11:00 a.m. at Precious Blood Church, 5253 Bennett Rd., Toledo, OH 43612 with Funeral Services beginning at 11:00 a.m. at church. Interment will follow in Ottawa Hills Memorial Park. Newcomer – West Sylvania Chapel (419-392-9500) assisted the family with professional services.

Those wishing to make memorial contributions are asked to consider Precious Blood Church.

The family would like to give a special thank you to Charlie Mati and Adella Dowden at the Manor at Perrysburg for all of their love, care, and support given to Gussie and her family through her stay there.
