Charles Powell, born January 27, 1954, departed this life on March
25, 2018. Charles, better known as Pookie, was born to the union
of Chester and Allean (Simmons) Powell in Toledo, Ohio. The
family then relocated to Holland, Ohio.
Charles graduated from Spencer-Sharples High School in 1973 and
played on the football team. He was employed at the Toledo State
Hospital as a Custodian and also at the Clean Ware Company until
he became disabled. He was also a Golden Glove Champion Boxer.
“Pookie” loved the Lord and was a faithful and long-time member
of Greater St. Mary’s Missionary Baptist Church. He was known
as the candy man and always supplied the members with a hand full
of peppermints He grew up in the country around three households
of Powell’s (the Nix’s, Bankston’s and Powell’s) that was a Village
of families who raise their own. He loved his five pet birds and
loved to fish, roller skate, and cook. He never met a stranger and
was loved by all his friends and neighbors.
Pookie was a family man who loved his kids and grandkids. He
had an infectious smile that captivated the heart of many. He always
tried to encourage others to do good.
He was preceded in death by both parents, brother Freddie, Sisters
Ethel Powell, Mary Powell and Shirley Powell Anderson
He leaves to cherish his memory two sons Charles, Jr. and Divron
Powell of Toledo; three grandchildren, Adrian and Antonio Steele,
and E’Marion Willie Lee Powell; niece Stacy Powell ; nephews,
Douglas, Allen and Brian Powell, and Shawn Anderson; aunt,
Neomia Powell of Toledo; uncle, L. B. Powell of Holland; Best
friends, Richard Lattimere, Denicio Brooks,, Robert McClain and
Willie Bankston and a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and
