Dr. Anthony Quinn, age 59, of Sylvania, passed away on Wednesday evening, March 14, 2018 at Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania. He was born June 4, 1958 in St. Louis Missouri.

He graduated from Riverview High School in St. Louis, Missouri. He attended Mid-American Nazarene University in Olathe, Kansas where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in biology. He also earned a Master ’s degree in biology from the University of Missouri in St. Louis, and a PhD in microbiology and immunology from the University of Oklahoma in Oklahoma City.

He joined the faculty at the University of Toledo Department of Biological Sciences in 2001 and was a renowned immunologist known for his work in deciphering the interplay between diabetes and immunity.

While battling pancreatic cancer, he co-developed UT’s strategic plan, co-directed the Multicultural Emerging Scholars Summer Bridge and Living Learning Community Program, and led the Brothers on the Rise mentoring program, while serving as an associate professor of biological sciences and assistant dean for diversity and inclusion in the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

Left to cherish his memory are his mother, Minnie Sampler; wife, Belinda (Brooks) Quinn; son, Colin; three brothers; Keith, Darren and Christopher Sampler, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews, and beloved friends.

The family will receive guests from 4-7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 19, 2018 at Warren A.M.E. Church, 915 Collingwood Blvd. The family will also receive guests on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 from 10-11:00 a.m. in the church. His Funeral Service will begin in the church on Tuesday, March 20, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. with Rev. Dr. Otis Gordon, Jr. officiating. He will be laid to rest in his hometown of St. Louis, Missouri in St. Peter’s Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family is requesting donations to support the Dr. Anthony Quinn We Are STEMM Fellowship Fund that has been created to support the initiative to ensure ongoing support of underrepresented graduate students in STEMM disciplines - scholars so important to Quinn.

Memorial contributions may be made to the University of Toledo Foundation, and mailed to The University of Toledo Foundation, 2801 W. Bancroft St., MS#319, Toledo, OH 43606
