1933 - 2017

Eileen Marie Backus, age 84, of Toledo, passed away December 10, 2017 at Ebeid Hospice Residence. She was born April 19, 1933 in Yonkers, New York to William and Rose (Sullivan) Leach. Eileen served her country in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. She retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad. Known as the “Maumee Mom,”and “Sergeant Major” to her children who all enlisted in the Marine Corps, Eileen enjoyed knitting, crocheting and loved to dance. Eileen was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister and friend who will be sadly missed by all who knew and loved her.

Eileen is survived by her children, Richard (Lynn Chandler) Backus, Greg (Virginia) Backus, Keith (Kelly) Backus and Deneen Parker; daughter-in-law, Julie Backus; 14 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and sister, Carol Hendel. In addition to her parents, Eileen was preceded in death by her son, Christopher Backus and siblings, Francis Ritz, Jean Wilson and William Leach.

The family will receive guests Thursday, December 14, 2017 from 2:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Newcomer - SW Chapel, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd, Toledo (419-381-1900), where a Scripture Service will be held at 7:00 pm. Funeral Services will begin Friday at 9:30 am at the funeral home followed by the Funeral Mass at 10:00 am at St. Patrick of Heatherdowns, 4201 Heatherdowns Blvd. Burial will follow at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer’s Association in Eileen's memory.
