1943 - 2017

Karla S. (Day) Morelli, age 73, of Toledo, passed away on Thursday, August 31, 2017 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio with her daughter by her side. She valiantly fought a 4 year battle with lung cancer. She was born and raised in Toledo to George E. and Carlina M. (Palm) Day on October 19, 1943 at the East Side Hospital in Toledo, OH. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Mark Plaid, Michael Zawierucha and Kelly Zawierucha; sister, Sherry (Doug) Smith; nieces, Cindy (Norm) Widmer and Christy Smith (Brandi Taylor) amongst many more relatives and friends. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by siblings, Patricia (Dick) Miller and Jim Day.

Karla was a graduate of Woodward High School in Toledo, OH. She worked many service jobs throughout her life and one of her biggest passions was connecting with people. She loved people and it was always evident in how she treated her friends, family and mere acquaintances. She was a natural at turning a stranger into a friend in one sitting. One of her favorite quotes by Maya Angelou was, “I’ve learned that people will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.” Karla lived by that philosophy very much so. She was quick to give a compliment and share a laugh and everyone loved her when they met her. Her biggest love in life was being a Mother to her three kids. She provided a loving home that was always filled with music, laughter and amazing home cooked food. She was a fanatic about Elvis and was passionate about music in general having an insurmountable knowledge of the oldies. If you asked Karla to name that tune, she could give you the name of the musician and the year it came out. She was a talented cook and enjoyed making big meals and sending them home with her family. Family was the center of her universe and she loved expressing her love in this manner. Her family and friends will remember her for her outgoing spirit and personality, sense of humor, love of laughter and quick wit.

The family will receive guests on Saturday, September 23, 2017 from 1-3:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300). Her Memorial Service will begin in the funeral home at 3:00 p.m.

In Karla's memory, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
