Laurel leaves behind her legacy in her family. She was the matriarch; a loving mother and adoring grandmother. Laurel always put her family first. To Laurel, no one was a stranger and she referred to everyone affectionately as “Honey.” She started her career late in her life, working for the Women’s Auxiliary at Riverside Hospital and then finally retiring at St. Anne’s Hospital at the age of 79.
Left to cherish her memory are her children, Rebecca Allen, Renée Smith and Ronald (Lisa) Smith; daughter-in-law, Theresa Smith; grandchildren, Dana (Mireya) LaPointe, Lisa (George) Lucio, Laurel Allen, Victoria Allen, Elizabeth Smith, Raymond Toda, Natasha Pesina, ReAnnen (Chris) Roth, Risa Smith and Thomas Joseph Smith; great-grandchildren, Andrea, Robert, Christopher, Amber, Azure, Aaron, Kierra, Jared, Ava, Mariah, Emma, Carson, TaShawn, Cody, R.J., Markisha, Haniel and Ella; great-great-grandchildren, Easton, Paisley, Damien and Pryce. Laurel was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas Virgil Smith; long-time companion, Robert Gordon; siblings, Bill Bechtel and Romaine Mebus; sons, Raymond V. Smith and Robin L. Smith.
The family will receive guests from 2-8:00 p.m. on Monday, June 19, 2017 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4752 Heatherdowns Blvd., Toledo (419-381-1900). The Funeral Service will begin at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Burial will take place at Ottawa Hills Memorial Park.
In Laurel’s honor, memorial donations may be made to: Hospice of Northwest Ohio or Breast Cancer Survivors Foundation.
