In Memory Of
Joseph P. "Joe" Schaefer
1952 - 2016

Joseph Patrick Schaefer, 63, of Toledo, died tragically in an auto accident on September 20th, 2016. Joe was born September 29th, 1952 to John and Esther “Pat” (Haubert) Schaefer in Sandusky, Ohio. He graduated from St. Mary Catholic High School in Sandusky before studying at Bowling Green State University. Rather than wait to be drafted, he interrupted his studies to enlist in the Army during the Vietnam War. He was very proud of his service in the 101st Airborne Division, nicknamed the “Screaming Eagles”, and took a great interest in Veterans issues for the rest of his life. He ultimately graduated from the University of Toledo and began his career in finance. After years of working for The Equitable, Joe left to form Schaefer, Kvasnicka & Kneip and established a very successful career as an independent financial consultant. He poured his heart and soul into building his business and truly loved helping his clients. He received many awards during his professional life and was recognized as being a top producer nationally by several broker-dealers. Joe was a people-person and loved his community. He served as a coach for the Trilby Baseball Association, was President and Lieutenant Governor of Kiwanis Club of Toledo, and served as Historian and Chaplain for the American Legion Adams Township Post #553. He was a regular at bars and restaurants in his neighborhood and was always ready to tell a story or have a laugh. He hosted countless parties at his home for friends and family, cruised to Put-In-Bay on his boat, drove across the country in his RV, and traveled to warm beaches. Joe’s personality was larger than life and he will be missed by many.

Joe was preceded in death by his sisters, Cindy Lou Schaefer and Christine Vodicka, brother, Reid (Gena) Schaefer, and mother Esther Schaefer. He is survived by his children, Neal (Lydia) Schaefer and Jessica (Alex Duncan) Schaefer; grandchildren, Willow Schaefer and Ivy Duncan; step-daughter, Alexandra Wolf; brothers, John (Deborah) Schaefer, Peter Schaefer, Paul (Charmaine) Schaefer and Tom (LaDonna) Schaefer; father, John Schaefer; and countless other friends and family members.

A visitation service honoring his life will be held Thursday, September 29th from 3:00 – 7:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home - Northwest Chapel, 4150 West Laskey Road, Toledo (419-473-0300) with Adams Township American Legion Post #553 Services at 6:30 p.m. in the funeral home.
