James R. "Jim" Spargos
1940 - 2016

James "Jim" Spargos, II died on August 25th after a long illness. Jim enjoyed a lifelong passion for cars and motorcycles. This talent led him to a decades-long career within the many incarnations of Jeep Corporation, from the Willys-Overland era up to the Daimler-Chrysler era. He started at the entry level, was promoted often, achieving the position of Design Engineer. The last car for which he designed parts was the Prowler, before retiring. Presumably descended from Greek fishermen, he also loved his old boat in the late 70's and explored Lake Erie and the islands. He enjoyed documentaries on the sciences, cosmology, physics, and advancements in automobile technology. He spoke of retiring to a tiny beach house by the water, building a garage and rebuilding classic cars and motorcycles--particularly his old Vincent.

Jim Spargos is preceded in death by his parents, Catherine Postlewait and James Spargos, Sr.; his daughter, Elizabeth Ann Spargos; his sister, Linda Szczecinski; brother-in-law, Cliff Szczecinski, and brother Richard Spargos. He mourned the loss of his lifelong friends, Bob and Don Shaud, Ed Polling, and friends from Toledo's own Banzai Motorcycle Shop.

Jim Spargos is survived by his son, James Spargos, III; daughter, Jenell Spargos and Carol Spargos, who provided plenty of home cooking, kept his coffee mug filled, and procured every car magazine and TV program available. Jim is also survived by his sister, Diane Wern (Jerry Wern), nephew, Phillip Utter; niece, Stephanie Wern-Jackson, her husband and daughter Leilyn; nephew, Cliff Szczecinski and Jose Velador; niece, Lori Szczecinski and husband, daughter Stevilyn, son, Brad; and his niece Rebecca Postlewait-Keifer. Jim is also survived by his sister, Rebecca Spargos-Naujoks, her husband, and sons Michael Shane and Clay.

Services were held on Thursday, September 1, 2016 at 2:30 p.m. at Toledo Memorial Park, 6382 Monroe St., Sylvania, OH. Visitation was held for an hour prior in the Chapel of Peace at the cemetery. The Newcomer Funeral Home – NW Chapel (419-473-0300) assisted the family with professional services.

The Spargos family would like to thank Hospice of Northwest Ohio for all their help, moral support, and kindness. They are miracle workers. If you're moved to donate or volunteer, consider Hospice of Northwest Ohio.
