Ralph Edward Trease, Sr., age 91, passed away on Sunday, May 22, 2016 at Promedica Ebeid Hospice in Sylvania. He was born on July 25, 1924 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania but was raised in Detroit, Michigan and graduated from Cass Technical High School. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II, with two Battle Stars in the European Theater.

He married his high school sweetheart, Elizabeth (Betty Jane Boers) on December 28, 1944 and they had nine children; sixteen grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren.

He earned his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from University of Detroit, a M.S. in Chemical Engineering from University of Michigan and a M.S. in Engineering Science from University of Toledo. He was a member of the Tau Beta Pi Honor Society.

Ralph worked for nine years for 3M Co. in Detroit and later retired after 22 years at Owens-Illinois Corp as a Research Scientist in plastics and printing processes. He had several patents and publications in technical papers. Ralph then taught chemistry at Monroe Community College for eight years and worked part-time for the City of Toledo Administration.

Ralph had many hobbies, including 40 years of family camping, coaching Pee Wee baseball, Cub and Boy Scout leadership for 12 years, genealogy, gardening and playing music with his family band.

He was an advocate for preserving historic buildings and schools. He lived for 55 years in his home that is over 100 years old in Bronson Place, a National Historic District Commission and was a member of the Landmarks Preservation Council.

Ralph was a member and Past Commander of the VFW Post 5530 (Roman "Buddy" Frankowski), where he enjoyed playing pinochle with comrade retirees.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Elizabeth Trease; two sons, Thomas and Robert; mother, Letty Biggs; daughter in law, Kathy Trease; son in law, Tom Brazzill; and brother, Clayton. He is survived by sons, Ralph, Jr. (Janet), Dennis, Joseph, and John (Linda); daughters, Kathleen Brazzill, Patricia (David) Smith, and Margaret (Jeffrey) O’Connell.

The family will receive guests on Tuesday, May 31, 2016 from 2-8:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4150 W. Laskey Rd. (419-473-0300). A VFW Service will begin in the funeral home on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. followed by a Sharing of Memories. Final Prayers will begin in the funeral home on Wednesday, June 1, 2016 at 9:00 a.m. followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady, Queen of the Most Holy Rosary Cathedral, 2535 Collingwood Blvd. Toledo, OH 43610 at 10:00 a.m. with Rev. Msgr. William J. Kubacki officiating. Interment will follow in Toledo Memorial Park in Sylvania with Military Graveside Honors presented by the Lucas County Veterans Burial Corps.
